Post Study Work Rights in Canada

International students can work in Canada after graduation by applying for a work permit, like PGWP or other. The work experience they gain while working will also help them in qualifying for Canadian permanent residence visa.

You may apply for PGWP, i.e., Post-Graduate Work Permit if you are graduated from a Canadian DLI (designated learning institution) and wish to stay and work in Canada temporarily. Otherwise, you may qualify for Employer-Specific Work Permit or Open Work Permit.

To qualify for PGWP, you must:

  • Have completed a vocational, professional or academic training program from an eligible Canadian DLI for at least 8 months which leads to a degree, certificate or diploma.
  • Have maintained a status of full-time student in Canada during entire academic session of the study program.
  • Have a transcript and an official letter from the DLI confirming that you met all the requirements to finish a study program.

Eligibility Requirements for Education in Canada

Though the key requirements with regards to admission and programs may vary depending on the academic institution you select to study, however, a few common requirements would be:

  • At least Grade 12 to get enrolled for an Undergraduate study in a public college or an university.
  • A Graduation degree to get enrolled for a Postgraduate study in a public college or an university.
  • Must have IELTS Academic at-least 6.0 overall bands in IELTS or 89 in TOEFL ( Internet Based Test) or Overall 56 in PTE.
  • To get enrolled in Master’s degree program you need at least 16 years of education (10+2+4) or equivalent . There are some Universities who accept 15 years if education for MBA and other master degree as well.
  • To get enrolled in MBA program, you need work experience along with the GMAT score of 550 range. ** Conditions Apply
  • A minimum of 50% in academics is required for getting admission for UG studies and 55% is required for PG studies. Students can secure admission in Masters degree in Universities if having 65% above in graduation

1. What is the key requirement to pursue a study program in Canada?

The very first step as an aspiring international student is to get admission to a Canadian DLI (Designated Learning Institution) that is recognized by the Canadian government. Secondly, valid IELTS Academicscore of overall 6.0 bands.Once you get a letter of acceptance from a DLI, you can apply for a study permit either online or via email.

4. Can my family members accompany me to Canada?

If you are a Canadianstudy permit holder, then your spouse or common-law partner can apply for an open work permit and you can indicate in your application that he/she will accompany you to Canada.Your spouse or common-law partner would be eligible for an open work permit.

While you’re studying, he or she can work full- or part-time for any employer in Canada without needing a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

If you are granted a post-graduate work permit once you complete your studies, your spouse or partner is eligible to renew their open work permit for the duration of your post-graduate work permit too.

International students are also eligible to bring their dependent children with them while they study. If your dependent child is school-aged, they are eligible to attend one of Canada’s free public elementary or secondary schools while you study without needing their own student permit.

5. Is there any minimum proof of funds requirement while applying for a study permit?

Yes, you need to show Proof of financial support to prove they you have sufficient funds to financially support yourself including your tuition fees&living expenses. Students can submit their Canada study visa application to IRCC under two categories ( Student Direct Stream- SDS or Generic Category)

Under, Student Direct Stream, a student has to pay one year tuition fees and have obtained a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of $10,000 from one of the financial institutions approved by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada to provide this service.

Under Generic Category, students need to show additional financial documents, like Income Tax Returns of sponsor, 6 months old bank statements, Chartered Accountant evaluation report on liquid & fixed assets, Fixed Deposits, etc
