Post Study Work Rights in the UK

The United Kingdom offers a post-study work visa (Graduate Route Visa UK) for graduates to work and stay for up to two or three years in case of a doctoral degree. 

With this visa, you can work in a variety of jobs, can be self-employed, can perform any voluntary work, and can also travel to international locations and return back. Whereas, you can’t apply for benefits via public funds or state pension, and can’t work as professional sportsperson in the UK.

Eligibility

Every UK higher education course sets its own entry requirements. These entry requirements are there to ensure that you have the right skills and knowledge to successfully complete the course.

At least Grade 12 to get enrolled for Undergraduate study in an University.

A Graduation degree to get enrolled for a Postgraduate study in an university.

Must have IELTS Academic at-least 6.0 overall bands in IELTS or Overall 56 in PTE.

A minimum of 50% in academics is required for getting admission for UG studies and 55% is required for PG studies.

To get enrolled in the MBA program, work experience is NOT mandatory. GMAT requirement of 550 varied from University to University

Some Universities also provide IELTS WAIVER** which depends upon Grade 12 English marks. A minimum of 60 is required in Grade 12 English to qualify for IELTS Waiver.

  • Minimum requirement of overall IELTS is 6.0 Bands or PTE overall 56
  • Any student who does not have 60 in Grade 12 English, does not qualify for IELTS Waiver. Those students must write UKVI IELTS in order to get enrolled for Pre Sessional English along with main course.

1. What are the types of study visa available in the UK?

There are three types of study visas available:

  • Short-term study visa
  • General student visa (Tier 4)
  • Child student visa (Tier 4)

2. Which visa is suitable for a long-term study program in UK?

For an international students from outside the EU, a Tier 4 (General) student visa is a must.

3. Who can apply for Tier 4 (General) student visa?

An applicant can apply for this student visa to study in the UK if he/she:

  • Is 16 or over
  • All non-EUnationals will need a UK student visa to study a course that lasts for longer than 6 months.
  • Can speak, read, write and understand English language
  • Have enough proof of money to support themselves and pay for their course
  • Is from a country which is not in Switzerland or European Economic Area (EEA)
  • Meet the key eligibility requirements

4. How long I can stay?

You can arrive in the UK before commencement of your course based on the following circumstances:

  • up to 1 week before, if your course duration is 6 months or less
  • up to 1 month before, if your course duration is more than 6 months
  • The UK post-study work visa allows international students to stay in the United Kingdom after graduation in order to find work, for up to 2 years.
  • The new visa rules will come into effect for all international students that begin their studies in autumn 2020 or later.

While, the duration of your stay depends up on the course you choose and what study you’ve already finished.

5. Which course I can pursue in the UK as a Tier 4 (General) student visa holder?

You can do a course which is:

  • Full-time and leads to a qualification of minimum level 6
  • An overseas course that is degree level study and equivalent to a UK higher education course managed by an overseas higher education institution
  • Full-time, with minimum an organised daytime study of 15 hours a week and leads to a qualification of minimum level 3
  • A recognized foundation program, i.e. a postgraduate doctor or dentist
